What's so special about us?
The idea behind CafeNICA started more than 3 years ago when its founder was involved in research on the global coffee markets and the coffee crisis of the 1990s. In search for the causes behind the crisis we also became interested in different types of coffee. Immediately we noticed that there were many fair trade coffees in the market but the quality and taste was poor. Coffees were just average in quality and the aftertaste was often bitter.
As, Nicaraguans we have, a certain background knowledge of the history of coffee in our country. We knew about our long tradition of coffee production and a coffee culture that was unique but obscure from the rest of the world. We set out, to discover the new coffee grown by the co-operatives in the Nicaraguan Highlands. This is how our journey of discovery started.
We were determined to challenge the ‘old stereotypes' that often gave a negative image to the country. We therefore decided to concentrate our efforts in bringing you a gourmet coffee produced and harvested by small-scale Nicaraguan farmers. Our coffee is proof that Nicaragua can produce an outstanding organic coffee without use of chemicals or pesticides.
Another of our goals was to prove that real Fair Trade is possible and that there is another dimension beyond the current model. We are a small channel that directly links conscious coffee consumers in the UK with small producers' co-operatives in Nicaragua.
We also wanted to share with you a coffee with a unique and consistent character. Our coffee is real proof of the existence of a Nicaraguan flavour: subtle with body overtones and smooth with a clean finish.
That's why we are convinced that this type of coffee is a real organic Masterclass!
